“DEWA”… developing smart services and a technology laboratory
The Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) has completed many projects and programs that rely on artificial intelligence technologies, which contributed to the smooth, fast and effective operation of the network, and achieved competitive results that exceed the level of European and American companies in efficiency and reliability, and subsequently some of the actual applications in the Authority.
The Authority has launched a laboratory for disruptive technologies, which provides a stimulating environment for engineers and innovators in the Authority to develop and test technologies for the Fourth Industrial Revolution, and another that uses idea design methodologies to help identify business requirements and challenges and come up with innovative solutions.
“Avatar” for communication
The Authority has incorporated the advanced 3D interactive avatar technology to facilitate cooperation between employees, by allowing them to have flexible interaction and facilitated 3D communication during meetings, via video technology. They can choose an “avatar” to represent them during these meetings.
At the beginning of this year, the Authority worked to enrich its services with GPT chat technology. To benefit from it in its various internal and external services, becoming the first service institution in the world, and the first government institution in the UAE to use this modern technology.
After its launch in February, and as part of its strategy to employ artificial intelligence technologies in all its operations and services, the Authority announced the start of experimental use of the technology in April on its website, through its virtual employee, “Rammas,” to improve the customer experience.
The Authority revealed that the “smart ball” technology it uses has achieved important results in detecting invisible leaks in water transmission lines buried underground, which are usually difficult to detect using traditional techniques, since its launch in April 2021 until the end of 2022. “Smart Ball” technology detected 43 leaks in the water transmission network in Dubai, preventing the waste of 130 million gallons of water, and resulting in financial savings amounting to 5.2 million dirhams.
After the ball is extracted, a special program processes the information, using mathematical algorithms, showing the exact location of leaks, gas pockets, or defects during the ball’s passage through the pipes. The ball travels inside the pipes at a speed of up to more than 3 km per hour, meaning it can examine more than 35 km per day, without affecting the water flow.
